Personally (ecologically, taste-wise, etc.) I am not especially happy with the idea that growing things meant to be eaten are being altered WITHOUT SUFFICIENT SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF THE CONSEQUENCES.
However: I work for a food manufacturer. Consistency of taste, color, etc. of ingredients is very important to us. The seasonal variations in items even as "simple" as Spanish onions or canned tomatoes can make my worklife hell. My boss does not really understand how to adjust for these variations, so I keep telling her that we need to buy genetically modified ingredients that will be consistent no matter what. (I'm only half joking.)
