: hmmm...an overwhelming response...it seems to point out that for most people in the industry, food-service is just a "temporary solution", and a "real job will happen soon". Therefore, it is acceptable to complain and not improve or make the best of it, as something better will come along. personally, the extrinsic rewards are obvious: money, benefits, etc. intrinsically, cooperation and respect from the customer is always nice, as a dining experience can only be better if both customer and staff are on "the same page". This involves the customer's willingness to accept that...maybe the server's suggestions are legitimate, and not an excuse to drive the check average up. That perhaps the chef chose the style/preperation/sauces for a reason, and completely recreating the menu item(ie i want a different sauce, etc) could be a mistake, and perhaps even rather rude(allergies notwithstanding)...on the flip side, staff stomping around and growling how the customer is an asshole isn't going to help. Anyway, end of rant, and I hope everyone makes it out the back door...nothin' left to do but smile, smile, smile... paul in philly
