Apples are the perfect, healthy snack for parents to put in their kid's lunchbox. Apple season is upon us and now is the time to take full advantage of this hardy and reliable fruit.

There are a number of ways to cook apples as well as to eat them out of hand. They are wonderful when baked into pies, tarts, crisps and cobblers and when cooked into sauces to serve as desserts or as toppings for pancakes and waffles. Apples are also delicious when sautéed with chicken or braised with red cabbage. They can be tossed into a stylish fruit salad with pears, endive and walnuts, or simply be cut up and served with cheese for a snack or dessert. The possibilities are endless.

There are many different types of apples on the market today. Here are just a few suggestions for cooking and eating apples. Some good cooking apples are: Baldwin, Granny Smith, Gravenstein, Jonathan and Northern Spy. Good eating apples include: Ida Red, Jonathan, Macoun, McIntosh, Mutsu and Winesap. Try them all and enjoy!
